Mexico's Gambit

The president of Mexico, Claudia Shienbaum, has been on the phone with President-Elect Trump this week regarding tariffs, drugs, and immigration. According to news sources he has said that on January 20, 2025 will close the border and impose high tariffs on goods from Mexico unless Mexico halts illegal border crossings, takes back any who have crossed the border without documentation, and halts the flow of narcotics into the United States.

Trump has always shown to be a man who believes that tariffs are paid by the exporting country (they aren't, they are paid-for by the companying in this country that imports the goods) and that saying a problem has been solved is the same as actually solving the problem.

Although Mexico will be hurt, severely by high tariffs, Trump's supporters will be hurt more through less availablity and higher prices for Mexican exports (cars electronic items, and especially fresh produce)

In reality, President Shienbaum, can stop the tariffs by agreeing to do everything Trump asks and denying to the Mexican press that she actually agreed to do these things. Of course, Mexico won't do anything that she may have promised Trump. She will always reply to Trump that she is working on it and plans to implement the new program in just a few weeks.

President Trump got away with this for four years... regarding replacing the Affordable Care Act with something better and less expensive, and with a infrastructure bill that would fix American highways and bridges. He was always working on a plan that would be announced and implemented in just a few weeks.

There is no reason why President Shienbaum can't get away with this for four years also.
