Hunkered Down in Bremerton

After the Election

Two weeks until the election. Fortunately for us Never Trumpers the soon to be ex-president is pretty much doing nothing to encourage anyone who is not a member of his core supporters to vote for him. The polls continue to show him trailing nationally and in most states (even most of the battleground states). We can only continue to remain optimistic.

If trends continue Trump may loose and it may be a landslide. Close elections can be contested, landslides speak for themselves.

There is lots of speculation that Trump will fight tooth and nail to contest the election. He may never concede, he may never accept the results.

However, what happens if it sinks in (before January 20, 2021) that he won't be continuing as President? What happens if it sinks in that he is not everyones favorite President as he claims? Does he stay on as a hang-dog lame-duck or does he resign?

If he stays on, he becomes an afterthought. There will be no transition. Neither he nor his staff have anything of value to pass on to a new administration. He certainly won't attend the inauguration. He will just slink out of the White House back to Mar-a-Lago. No press coverage, because no on cares.

The only thing the press might cover is the Secret Service escorting him out of the building at noon. You can bet that Secret Service officers are truly looking forward to this opportunity.

His alternative is to resign ... for health reasons. Not because he lost the election. Perhaps the Covid-19 has flared up. He can leave a hero to his supporters and a hero to the Never Trumpers. Picture him waving and giving the victory salute (ala Nixon) from the South Lawn as be boards Marine One. This would be a moment for everyone to remember and in a good way.

Mike Pence would become President for just a few weeks. In an ideal world (like on The West Wing) President Pence and President-Elect Biden would take these few weeks to begin a transition away from hyper-partisanship and to rebuilding trust between the two parties and among Americans. Kumbaya - Kumbaya. Bring in Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Kevin McCarthy and the new Senate Minority Leader and work on a way to move forward in peace and harmony. No expanding the Supreme Court. No nuclear option. Genuinely work together to slow the pandemic; improve health care; and help-out families, businesses, and local governments through the truly tough economic times. Kumbaya - Kumbaya -- Could Happen.
