Hunkered Down in Bremerton

Trump's Tantrum over Covid-19 Relief

Trump has painted the Republicans into a corner. Republican politicians in their stupid loyalty to a truly stupid president now face the prospect of losing control of the Senate.

A week ago McConnell was proclaiming victory. He was taking credit for successfully negotiating a truly bi-partisan agreement to simultaneously fund the federal government through the remainder of the fiscal year and creating much needed relief to financially starved families throughtout the nation. He shouldn't give himself all of the credit. Chuck Schumer in the Senate, Nancy Pelosi and Kevin McCarthy in the House of Representitives, and Steve Mnuchin at the Department of the Treasure also deserve equal credit.

But McConnell seems to be taking most of the credit and in turn passing it on to David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, the Republican candidates in the January 5 Run-Off elections in Georgia. Television commercials running now for Perdue and Loeffler proclaim that voters in Georgia will soon be receiving extended unemployment benefits and direct government payments as a direct result of the candidates actions in the Senate. How could Georgia voters elect anyone other than these great folks who are so helping the downtrodden citizens of Georgia?

But wait, a week has now passed since victory has been declared and Trump hasn't agreed to this. In fact he is threatening to veto the legislation or even to perform a "Pocket Veto". In either case Georgia voters will receive no direct stimulus payments nor extended unemployment benefits before the run-off election. To make it worse much of the federal government will shutdown after November 29 and throw millions of more people out of work with no unemployment benefits. Perdue's and Loefflers proclamations are totally bogus and the voters know it.

To make it worse for the Republicans, the two Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock are running ads pointing out how bogus the Republicans claims are and that the only way stimulus legislation will pass is to elect Democrats. A Republican majority in the Senate will not pass any Covid-19 relief stimulus legislation.

All Trump had to do was to agree to sign then legislation as soon as it was passed. He made it worse by threatening to veto it. So Stupid. So Sad.
