Hunkered Down in Bremerton

A Lack of Planning and Execution For All

Here's one that we can't blame on Trump. There seems to be a total lack of planning at the local level for individuals wanting to make appointments for Covid-19 vaccinations. Here I live with major operations of two of the largest tech and cloud computing giants in the world in our back yard yet local health care providers have websites that are completely unprepared to do the high-volume level of transactions that are needed to make Covid-19 vaccinations reservations

It was just last week that Washington moved to stage 1B of eligibility for vaccinations, which meant those of us over the age of 65 (as well as some others) are now eligible. In Kitsap county this is around 35,000 people. Virtually everyone of us this age group wants to get vaccinated, and we want to get vaccinated as soon as possible. We have been told that there will be plenty of vaccine available.

Did it not occur to the Kitsap Public Health District, Peninsula Community Health Services, and CSI Franciscan that when they announce appointment availablity that there would be a large demand on their websites... especially considering that they basically don't do appointments by phone. Thirty five thousand people want to make appointments. Did they not consider that their website providers did not have sufficient capacity in terms of band-width, processing power, and storage to handle thousands of simultaneous transactions. Did they not plan for this eventuality. They expected business as usual. Boy do they seem dumb. Did they even talk to their web providers in advance?

Especially dumb considering that just across the Sound, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure cloud providers can handle hundreds of thousands simultaneous transactions.

So having been through system crashes in the past week with all three of these health care providers, I am frustrated. Their answer has been sorry our systems crashed ... try again next time. How competent are these folks really? Should we be trusting them with our health care? What choice do we have.

After seeing the low level at which our society and governments truly operates, I can better understand those marching in the streets and in the Capitol. Whether they are marching for Trump, or Black Rights Matter, or just anarchy they are truly fed up with the current system. Our system at times does not seem to stand for "Liberty and Justice For All", but rather "A Lack of Planning and Execution For ALL".
