Hate Crimes against Pacific Islanders and Fake News

Clearly with Trump gone from the radar there isn't a lot of talk about "fake news" and the "fake news" media. But the amount of misinformation in the news media is still staggering. In my humble opinion it isn't and never was "fake" news. It was and continues to be reporting done by lazy, talking heads who aren't what we should consider professional journalists.

These days there is a lot of reporting about "hate crimes" being committed against Asians and Pacifc Islanders. My guess is that by "hate crimes" they are meaning crimes committed against persons from specific ethnic groups merely because they are members of those specific ethnic groups. My understanding is that killing someone because they are black is worse than killing someone because they "dissed" you. In my mind committing a homocide (killing someone) is just about worse than anthing else regardless of your motive. Let's just dismiss the concept of "hate crimes" in general and focus on crimes.

I am aware (and as a rational human being I condem) crimes of violence that are being committed in increasing numbers against Americans of several Asian ethnicities. Mostly people of Chinese but also some of Korean and Japanese ethnicity. Few crimes seen to be committed against of South and West Asian ethnicities (including Iranians). These are serious crimes that are seemingly targeted against a specific group of not just Asians but people of specific East Asian ethnicities.

The United States Government recognizes an ethnic grouping (do they mean race?) called "Asian-Pacific Islanders" which includes traditional Asian ethnicities including Chinese, Korean, Pakistani, Vietnamese, and Indian but not Iranian or Arab. It also includes Pacific Island ethnic groups such as Japanese, Phillipino, Malay, Melanesian and Micronesian. . Ethnically Polynesians are included unless they are from New Zealand, Hawaii., or Tahiti. Other than geography and being human what do the Japanese, the Pakistanis, and Fijians have in common that would cause us to lump them together as a "race"?

But let's get real. I have not heard of any increase in crimes of violence being committed again residents of American islands in the Pacific Ocean or who's families emigrated to the United States from Pacific Islands including Japan. I have several friends who were born on Catalina Island. Does that make them Pacific Islanders?

So who are these "Pacific Islanders" that the lazy news media talking heads keep reporting as being the targets of "Hate Crimes"?
