Hunkered Down in Bremerton

Taking a Step Back is Wrong

This coming Monday Wasington Governor Jay Inslee is expected to announce that several counties are being moved back to phase 2 of The Healthy Washington - Roadmap to Recovery. All counties had been moved to Phase 3 on March 22. Moving back will restrict restaurants to 25% capacity and reduced allowed indoor gatherings from 10 to 5 and for outdoor gatherings from 50 back to 15.

This are the counties punishments for higher numbers of Covid-19 cases. Are the county and city government leaders being punished? How about health officials being punished? Are the citizens in general being punished? The answers are No, No, and slightly. Who is being punished ? The owners and employees of restaurants, bars and sports and entertainment providers.

It will be interesting to see if King County is moved down a phase. That will mean that the Seattle Mariners will have to stop allowing spectators. Will the state fudge the numbers to keep King County in phase 3?

We've had a year now to gather evidence about restaurants and get-togethers. I have not seen any evidence that would indicate that forcing restaurants to decrease their occupancy from 50% to 25% has done anyting to reduce the spread of of Covid-19. Is there any evidence that reducing indoor gathers from 10 to 5 or outdoors from 50 to 15 will accomplilsh anything? Do you really expect that the number of new cases of Covid-19 will decrease by not allowing 9000 fans into T-Mobile Park?

This is a case if "if you only have a hammer in your tool box, every problem looks like a nail". These are the only tricks that Governor Inslee has up his sleeve. Punish the owners and employees of restaurants and Mariners fans.

Good luck with that. In California, Governor Newsome is now facing a recall election for his handling of Covid-19 restructions. Perhaps it is time for Washingtonians to force a recall election of the governor.
