Hunkered Down in Bremerton

Washington DC - Path to Statehood

The House of Representitives just passed legislstion to make Washington DC become the 51st state. This is a total waste of time unless 100% of the Democrats in the Senate (including fence sitter Joe Manchin of Wsst Virginia) are willing to fight for this. As it now stands the Senate will require 60 votes to bring the question of statehood to the floor for a vote. Ain't gonna happen.

In order to bring the question of statehood to the floor, one of two things must happen:

Either the Democratic Senators must apply a full-court-press and force the Republicans into a 1960s style filabuster. Let the Senate remain in sesson 24/7 with Republications holding the floor until they concede as happened with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Currently the mere threat of a filabuster is sufficient to block votes. No more threats - put up or shut up.

or... The Democrats must invoke the Nuclear Option. It only takes a majority vote (possibly including the vice president) to change the rules. The rules were changed in 2013 by the Democrats to allow judicial appointments to come to a vote without a filibuster or threat of filabuster. This change lead to the Trump appointments of Brett Cavanaugh and more controversally Amy Coney Barrett.

Senate rules could be changed to allow statehood votes without 60 votes. Will Senator Schumer work to make this happen? Who knows. But if the citizens of Washington DC want their voices heard in the Senate.. This is the only way forward. Otherwise the House of Representitive have once again wasted their valuable time on political theater.
