Hunkered Down in Bremerton

What We Have Learned in 20 years

This marks the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attacks called 9/11. We all remember them. It was an awful day. We vowed that we would come together as a country as happened when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and get revenge. Lets look at what happened instead.

Did we come together as a country? Hardly, we are much further divided than we were then. We are so divided that we couldn't prevent the election of the most stupid, uninformed, unpatriotic, corrupt person who has ever been president. Even today his lies and the lies of his followers are taken as gospel truth by millions of Americans. Trump received 75 million votes in 2020 and his popularity has not waned one iota with his followers.

People are lining up to take Ivermectin, a veterinary medicine, to prevent Covid-19. They don't believe the actual experts who say that getting vaccinated is safe and that taking horse medicine not only won't prevent Covid-19 but hasn't been approved safe for humans. What gives? They believe the crap they read on facebook. They believe DeSantis and Gaetz and not Fauci. How stupid is that?

The divide that has increased in this country is not between lilberals and conservatives or between progressives and what used to be called the moral majority. The divide is between the stupid (who have become more vocal since 9/11) and the intelligent.

Did we extract revenge from the Terrorists? Well, we killed Osama bin Laden..that was a measure of revenge. But the Taliban, who have always harbored terrorists, have taken control of Afghanistan and our militry has left... Perhaps the Taliban and terrorist organizations have extracted revenge from us.

We have, however, accomplished something major. Our enhanced security along with intelligence and military actions may have prevented another major foreign-based terrorist attack in the United States. As a people we are more safe than we were twenty years ago. This is a major accomplishment and yet it receives little attention in the press. We are safer from foreign-based terrorist attacks now then we were before. Lets celebrate this.
