Hunkered Down in Bremerton

Howard's Creations - Kitsap Spirit Weather

This week I am launching a new website, which initially will be called Howard's Creations - Weather Spirit. This is called Kitsap Spirit Weather because it brings forth the Spirit of Weather... Present (eg. current conditions) , The Spirit of Weather.. Past (eg. historical climate data) and the Spirit of Weather... Future (eg. seven day forecasts). Additionally there are tidal forecasts, current tide levels, and past data about tides. The data covers Bremerton specifically, but much is applicable to the entire Kitsap Peninsula.

I became interested in tracking weather data during 2021 as the Kitsap Peninsula endured some record setting events. The highest and the lowest official tempertures were recorded last year (110 degrees F and 5 degrees F). The only local media that covers Kitsap on a daily basis is The Kitsap Sun. Its weather page displays historical data and forecasts for the region. However, for historical data there is no indication of which day is being displayed. I have discovered that sometimes it is yesterday, sometimes it is three days old. Clearly this is not as important for them as it is for me. At no point have they written that the December 31 overnight low temperature of 5 degrees was the historical all-time low.

For Weather Spirit current weather data is recorded by the Port of Bremerton at Bremerton National Airport. Forecasts are supplied by and downloaded from the National Weather Service of the United States Government National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Historical weather data is downloaded from MesoWest at the University of Utah and Synoptic Data. Tidal forecasts are downloaded from the NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services. Historical tide levels were downloaded from NOAA Tides and Currents which tracks oceanographic data for the U.S. Government. Current tide level data is created by a tide gauge located in Sinclair Inlet at the Bremerton ferry dock. All data and forecasts are in the public domain.

The gathering of historical data has been quite a fun project (in my terms of fun). During my working career in I.T. one of my specialties was combining and aligning data from dissimilar sources.

I have created several sets of queries for weather information that I am interested in. Please give them a try. If there is other information that you would like to see queried please let me know. You can send me a text or email message from this website.
